POINT THERAPIES
Just as numerous offshoots have incorporated the bilateral stimulation first utilized in EMDR, a number of therapies are based on tapping or holding acupuncture or acupressure points while programming in (usually by saying out loud) more positive feelings and beliefs. Some people have a hard time taking this seriously as a credible treatment protocol, but for those who are pragmatic, all that matters is whether it works.
One of these tapping therapies becoming popular right now is Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). Some therapists employ it along with many other tools, but it can also be used alone as a self-help tool. You can go to www.emofree.com and download a free, easy-to-follow manual that tells you how. The procedure takes only minutes to do, and generally you’ll feel an immediate easing of feelings about something you’ve been upset about. The Web site is filled with first-person reports, some of them related to trauma. With a technique like this, usually the worst that will happen is that you won’t have improvement, so many people find it worth experimenting with.
The tapping therapy that served as a foundation for EFT was Thought Field Therapy (TFT), which some of you may have heard of. TFT uses specific tapping sequences for various mental health problems, whereas EFT has one basic protocol thought to work with a vast array of disturbances. The Tapas Acupressure Technique (TAT) involves the practitioner placing his or her fingers on or over various acupressure points on the client’s head. I consider TFT and TAT more as techniques or singular tools than as full-fledged therapeutic systems, such as TARA (next), which also involves holding meridian acupuncture points.
